Getting started: Windows Vista includes the ability to create and restore image-based backups of system volumes. To create an image file, open Control Panel’s Backup and Restore Center and choose the CompletePC Backup option. (You can also use the standalone Backup program.) [See Windows Vista takes on Norton Ghost.]

Admin approval: Any backup or restore operation requires administrative rights. In Vista, that means User Account Control clicks in and requires that you give consent.
Choose a location: You can save an image file to a local hard disk - internal or external - or to a writable DVD drive. (Sorry, no network drives permitted

Choose what to back up: A CompletePC backup can contain one or more volumes. If you have multiple drives defined, you can choose one or more to back up as part of a single operation. (For obvious reasons, you can’t include the drive where the backup file will be saved

Restoring a backup: To restore a CompletePC backup, boot from the Vista DVD, load any required drivers, and follow the prompts to the System Recovery Options dialog box. Click the CompletePC Restore option

Completing the restore: The final dialog box confirms your selection and allows you to specify some advanced options. When you click Finish, the restore begins
